If you have not dealt with PHP and MySQL version 5, you are not a real man. On this one, we compiled a team of veterans and improved the Laravel-backed system performance by 80% in speed and cut some 40% on the AWS infra cost.

The Challenge

Being an internal system, there was no way a big request to fall on the company product board, that is why I went the partisan way and managed to compile a small scrum team of 3 PHP devs and a DevOps where I played the PO and QA.

The Solution

The system continues to perform beyond managements expectations and despite common perceptions about PHP longevity, this project demonstrated that a well-executed code endures. The biggest win - it is half the business that relies on the report of that tool for the monthly payroll, and I have peace of mind after the project was delivered.

The Struggle

Dealing with company politics is not something you find in the first couple of bullets in the guides for being a great performer at work. It requires chocolate, positivism, patience, persistence, and yes - persuasion and manipulation. People are allowed to hate project managers.
